SR. OLGA IRIS DIAZ

OBITUARY

DOMINICAN SISTER OF THE PRESENTATION

Sr. Olga Iris Diaz was born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico on May 14, 1945 to Jorge Diaz Martinez and Dionicia Nunez Diaz. She grew up in New Jersey attending Camden High School from which she graduated.

She entered the Congregation of the Dominican Sisters of the Presentation on September13, 1982. She made her first profession of vows on August 24, 1985 and her final vows on July 6, 1993.

Sr. Olga studied at Regina Mundi in Rome for one year. Later she took courses in pastoral education and counseling for the sick and elderly at Stonehill College in Massachusetts. From1989 to 1993 she served at Marian Manor Nursing Home in Taunton, Massachusetts in pastoral care with great kindness and compassion.

From 1993 to 1997 Sr. Olga was the Provincial Secretary of the USA Province, sharing the richness of her training and experience as a secretary before entering the Congregation.

In 1998, Sr. Olga returned to Puerto Rico for 10 years to care for her sick and elderly mother.

Being firm in her belief that she was called to religious life, she then returned to the USA Provincial House for a time and was assigned to Rosary House of Studies in Washington, D.C. where she gave on-going support to the students and did parish visitation to the sick and needy. However, Sr. Olga was not there for very long before she was sent to Guiamaca, Honduras where she taught English and gave religion classes to the students of the Marie Poussepin School. She spent the next 10 years as a dedicated teacher there, bonding and learning from and with the students. She was quick to laugh with them as they struggled with pronunciation, and she grew in her capacity to teach and flourished not only as a teacher but as a mentor as well. Sr. Olga also worked at our dispensary in Guiamaca as a receptionist and visited many families as part of the outreach of the mission to those in need.

Due to an illness, Sr. Olga returned to the USA Provincial House in Dighton in 2021. Since she increasingly required more care due to her disability, she was sent to Catholic Memorial Nursing Home in Fall River, MA in 2023 where she died on April 14, 2026.

Sr. Olga is survived by her sister Gladys Rodriguez, her husband Carlos and their son Javier, her brothers Tellin and George Diaz, as well as several nieces and nephews.

The visitation will be held Thursday, April 16, at the Dominican Sister's of the Presention, 3012 Elm St. Dighton from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

Her Funeral Mass will be Friday, April 17 at 10:00 AM at the Dominican Sister's of The Presentation.  Committal prayers and burial will follow graveside at Notre Dame Cemetery, Fall River.
