Fall River

Listen to Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Vavó, sister, and

friend, Leotildes F. Mello, 88, of Fall River, wife of the late beloved husband, Jose P.

Mello, on Friday, June 12, 2026.

Born and raised in Capelas, São Miguel, Azores, she was the daughter of the late

Jose and Albertina Melo. In 1966, she courageously immigrated to the United States

along with her family in pursuit of a better life.

She is survived by her loving family, who will forever cherish her memory, including her

daughters, Licia Raposo and Eduarda Rodrigues (David); her sons, Mario Mello

(Lezette), and Tibet Mello (Kerri). She was a proud and devoted Vavó to Amanda,

Adam, Ashley, and Ryan, and an adoring great-Vavó to Hunter, Wyatt, Axel, and Cole,

all of whom brought immeasurable joy to her life.

She is also survived by her brother, Jose F. Melo, of Fall River, who was her caregiver

until the end, and her sister, Armanda Camara, of California, along with many nieces,

nephews, relatives, and dear friends.

Family was the center of her world. Known affectionately as “Vavó,” she was the glue

that held generations together. Her home was always filled with warmth, laughter, and

the comforting aroma of authentic Portuguese cooking. She expressed her love

through food, preparing countless meals for family, friends, and her church

 community.

Her homemade malasadas became a cherished tradition, and she could often be

found volunteering at church events, always ready to lend a helping hand wherever it

 was needed.

A woman of deep and unwavering faith, she was devoted to the Catholic Church

throughout her life. As a Eucharistic Minister, she faithfully served her parish

community for many years. Her dedication to her faith and service to others was

recognized through the awarding of the Marian Medal, an honor she received with the

same humility that characterized her entire life.

She was known for her kindness, generosity, and positive spirit. No matter the

circumstances, she greeted life with a smile, laughter, and remarkable strength. She

taught those around her countless lessons through her actions rather than words—

showing the importance of faith, resilience, hard work, and unconditional love.

Her life story was one of determination and perseverance. She often shared stories

from her childhood in the Azores, including catching octopus along the shores of

Portugal. These stories reflected the hardworking spirit that remained with her

throughout her life. She also found great joy in gardening and sewing, creating beauty

with her hands and taking pride in everything she cultivated, whether it was a garden,

a meal, a piece of clothing, or a family tradition. Of all her accomplishments, her

greatest joy came from her family, especially her great-grandchildren. Nothing brought

a bigger smile to her face than spending time with her boys.

Though our hearts are broken by her passing, we are profoundly grateful for the gift of

her life and the legacy she leaves behind. Her faith, strength, compassion, and

devotion to family will continue to guide us for generations to come.

She was predeceased by her son-in-law, Joseph Raposo; her granddaughter, Holly

Mello; and her sisters, Berta Pereira and Maria Melo.

She will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished.

All are invited to her visitation at the Auclair Funeral Home, 690 South Main St. Fall
