Fall River-Joseph J. Pitera Jr., age 74, passed away at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Plymouth, MA on December 16, 2021 with family by his side. He was the son of the late Joseph J. Pitera Sr. and Frances (Sanocki) Pitera.
Joe graduated from Durfee High School, then continued his education at Roger Williams College and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (SMU), where he graduated with his bachelor’s degree in Sociology. While attending college, he met his wife, Barbara A. Backus. He also served in the National Guard from 1970-1976. For the past several years, he has been retired from his longtime position of substitute teacher/ in-school suspension monitor at Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School.
Joe was an avid coin collector and loved classic cars and woodworking. He also had a passion for the outdoors including: hunting, fishing, archery, and target/rifle shooting. He once won 1st place in the state of Maine for traditional shooter.
He was predeceased by his parents Joseph J. Pitera Sr. and Frances (Sanocki) Pitera. Surviving in addition to his wife Barbara A. (Backus) Pitera, are his daughters Stacy Vinciguerra and her husband Michael of Bristol, R.I. and Barbara Vieira and her significant other Jared Monast of Somerset, MA. He also leaves behind three grandchildren: Caitilin Venancio of St. Petersburg, FL and Bristol Vieira and Brenden Vieira, both of Somerset, MA, as well as a long -time companion Marilyn DaCosta of Fall River.
At his request, there will be no services at this time, a celebration of life will be held at a later date.
