Joan M. Szelag

Joan M. (Hunt) Szelag, 85, of Fall River, MA passed away on Wednesday, September 17, 2025. She was the wife of the late Matthew M. Szelag.

Born in Fall River, she was the daughter of the late Lynward W. and Gertrude P. (Kelly) Hunt.

Joan was a graduate of Sacred Heart Academy, class of 1957. Joan went on to earn her bachelor’s degree from Bryant University in Providence, RI. She worked for many years in the Juvenile Probation Department of the Second District Court in Taunton, Attleboro, and Fall River until her retirement. She enjoyed knitting, gardening, and was an avid reader. She also enjoyed furniture refinishing. After her retirement, she grew fond of birdwatching while sitting in her backyard.

Joan is survived by her son, Matthew M. Szelag, Jr. She was the mother of the late Thomas M. Szelag and the sister of the late Judith Keeley.

Her Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph’s Church, N. Main Street, Fall River. Burial to follow at Oak Grove Cemetery.
