Alice Downing, 97, a loving mother and cherished friend, departed this life on Sunday, October 13, 2024, at St. Anne's Hospital. Born on September 3, 1927, in Fall River, she was raised with the values of hard work and kindness instilled by her parents, Jose and Mary (August) Viera. The foundations laid by her family illuminated the path for the compassionate woman she would become.
Alice made a significant mark in her community through her dedicated career at Charlton Memorial Hospital, where she selflessly worked for 20 years before retiring. Her commitment to caring for others defined her professional journey and created lasting connections with both colleagues and patients alike.
In her personal life, Alice found joy in the simple pleasures. She had a passion for Bingo, loved the thrill of gambling, and often delighted in visiting casinos with friends and family. These moments, filled with laughter and adventure, were a testament to her spirited personality.
She is survived by her beloved daughter, Vivian L. Arruda; granddaughter Kelly Messier (her husband Michael) and a dear family friend, Jackie Hutzal as well as nieces and nephews.
Alice was predeceased by her first husband, William Cordeiro, and her second husband, George Downing. Additionally, she mourned the loss of her precious granddaughter, Jodi Arruda, whose memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved them deeply. She was also the sister of the late Tina Medeiros and many other siblings.
A visitation to celebrate Alice’s life will be held on October 19, 2024, from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 12:00 PM at the Auclair Funeral Home, 690 South Main St. Fall River.
As we bid farewell to this remarkable woman, let us hold close the memories of her warmth, her laughter, and the love that radiated from her heart. Alice Downing leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and joy that will continue to inspire those fortunate enough to have known her.
